This colourful little restaurant is conveniently located on the Gold Coast highway. Having been born in Cape Town, I am very familiar with roti’s, which for your information are a very thin flat bread, similar to a wrap but fried in butter and usually filled with a curry of some sort. It may sound strange but trust me, they are super delicious!
We arrived at about 6.30pm on a Friday evening, to find the restaurant quite empty…it seemed most customers prefer take-away and after 8pm it’s take-away only anyway. The staff were extremely friendly and knowledgeable.
We ordered a lamb and chicken roti, which was served with vegetables, potato and chickpeas. For $9.50, this was probably one of the best meals I have had in a long time. The chicken was so tender and the roti itself was quite large, however I still managed to eat it all. My partner’s roti had the most tender chunks of lamb yet the vegetables still had some crunch to them, while the potato was cooked nice and soft.
Other options are prawn, beef, creole pork or vegetable curry. Note that this is a dry Caribbean curry, very different to the creamy Indian curries and a lot healthier too. Don't get me wrong, i do love a good Indian curry occasionally . Below is a shot of the unopened roti – no cutlery needed!
A steady stream of locals and customers kept stopping by to collect orders or to buy take-away roti’s, which confirmed the popularity of the place. We ate our roti’s at one of the tables and the staff even took a photograph for us. If you haven’t tried them already, you need to…these roti’s are fantastic!
